Pioneers Winless on the Road

Pioneers Winless on the Road  - Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 9/23/22

CRC traveled to St. Louis to compete in a Tri- Match which included the hosting University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy and Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Lady Pioneers went winless on the road  falling to first UHSP and then to Calumet in straight sets.

Game one

CRC- 0

UHSP- 3

Crowley's Ridge would lead set one with their best foot forward. After having a few days rest, CRC seemed to get into the groove of things early. Several Lady Pioneers found the holes in the defense with freshmen Bianna South leading the way with 4 kills in a 10 kill effort in set one. This would almost ensure the win, but UHSP would muster a 14 kill effort just besting the Lady Pioneers in set one 25-20.

Set two, the Lady Pioneers would strike first jumping ahead 10-6, forcing a UHSP timeout. When play resumed, the hosting team would go on a 10-1 run reclaiming the lead with help from 3 service aces and 4 kills that found the gaps in CRC's defense. UHSP again reached double digits in kills. Totaling 12 kills compared to a 5 kill effort  by CRC helping them take the second set 25-18.

Set three, CRC would look to answer being down two sets to none but wouldn't be able to overcome the deficit. The Lady Pioneers would fight hard with help from sophomore Jadyn Hesse setting up juniors Emi Elms and Brooklynn Passmore on the outside that kept the pressure on UHSP. The score was neck and neck with CRC trailing by one at a score of 17-18 when UHSP would turn on the afterburners and pull away going on a 7-1 run to take the match with a score of 25-18 defeating the Pioneers in straight sets.

Leaders:

Freshman Brianna South led the Pioneers with (6) kills, Sophomore Jadyn Hesse led the Pioneers in assists (18), Freshmen Kinley Matlock led the Pioneers in digs (17).

Game Two

CRC- 0

Calumet- 3

The Pioneers looked to break the losing streak in match two of the day, but they would be facing a tough matchup against Calumet. CRC would fight but again would not be able to cover the deficit as Calumet would increase their kills per set  after each one and would prove to be too much for the Pioneers. The Pioneers again would fall in straight sets.

In set one, CRC would prove that they were ready to play with kills from juniors  Brooklynn Passmore and Hannah Halverson along with freshmen Brianna South making things even at 7-7. The Pioneers wouldn't see momentum leave their side until Calumet rallied and went on a 7-1 run taking the score from a 7-7 set, to a 14-8 lead over CRC. Calumet would hold the lead taking set one 25-17.

Set two, Calumet would increase their team kills finishing with 13 in the set.  With this blitz of kills, the Pioneers fell behind early with a score of 14-3. CRC would rally off seral errors by Calumet, going on their longest run of the night,7-0, which would cut the gap to only  trail 14-10. With what little momentum CRC mustered Calumet would snatch it back with a 7 point run of their own. The Crimson Wave would take set two 25-15.

In set three, Calumet would better their kill performance again dishing out a match high 16 kill performance against the Pioneers. Not wasting any time and with the Pioneers fighting an uphill battle, Calumet would start the set with a 7-1 run. Crowley's Ridge would battle back but could't find the open holes in the Crimson Wave defense and would soon see themselves trailing with a score of 7-15. Juniors Brooklynn Passmore and Hannah Halverson would find a kill each late in the match but the deficit would hold and Calumet would win the set 25-14, defeating CRC

Leaders:

Junior Brooklynn Passmore led the Pioneers in kills with (7), Sophomore Jadyn Hesse led the Pioneers in assists with (15), Junior Hannah Halverson led the Pioneers in digs with (15).
