Lowery Lifts Pioneers to 2-0 in Florida- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 1-28-23.
Women's basketball took on Voorhees University earlier yesterday afternoon in search of their second win in Florida after defeating Florida National yesterday in a close victory with the help of a late 4th quarter run. The Pioneers would keep the same game plan against Voorhees as they needed all the time they could get by cutting it close for the entire contest. What would ultimately give the Pioneers the win would be two free throws with 9.1 seconds left in the game, ending the matchup with the Pioneers ahead 56-54. With this win, the Pioneers improve to 12-7 overall on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
Temple Terrace, FL- The Tigers struck first with a three-ball jumping ahead 3-0. Octavia Lowery would get points on the Pioneers' side of the scoreboard with a jumper. Lowery would prove to be the backbone the team could lean on throughout the contest but for the moment, each team would seem to be equally matched as neither could pull ahead. The Pioneers end quarter one up by one, 8-7. The Pioneers produced a better 2nd quarter with a team collective of 14 points. The Pioneers pulled ahead by 5 at the 4:47 mark with another jumper from Octavia Lowery, but the Tigers would stick around with 12 points of their own. The Pioneers entered the break up three, 22-19. When the third quarter kicked off the Tigers busted out a 7-0 run reclaiming the lead. 26-22. As CRC crawled their way back into the game the Tigers again went on a run, this one being an 8-point rally, increasing their lead to 34-25. With 4:20 left in the third Octavia Lowery would catch fire, and score the Pioneers' next 9 points keeping them in the game as the quarter ended with the Tigers up 38-35. With the game coming down to the wire, Reigiana Ward would answer the call by hitting back-to-back three-balls retaking the lead 41-40 with 7:50 left to play. The Pioneers couldn't pull away as the Tigers would retake the lead almost immediately. Brinley Morgan decided it was her turn to take the reigns. Morgan linked together a 5-point effort to retake the lead once more for the Pioneers, but again Voorhees came back with buckets of their own matching the Pioneers 52-52 with just over a minute left in the contest. As the clock ticked under one minute remaining the Tigers reclaimed the lead 54-52 with a jumper truly putting the pressure back on CRC. CRC called a timeout to try and grasp control of what they could. When Crowley's Ridge inbounded the ball Octavia Lowery would dribble the floor until she saw an open shot and took it. Lowery's shot was true and the Pioneers were back even once again. Lowery decided enough was enough and called game by taking control one last time. The Senior snatched down the defensive rebound off the missed field goal from the Tigers drawing the foul in the process. With 8 seconds left in the game, she stepped to the charity stripe and sank both shots, forcing a three-point shot from the Tigers. Voorhees wouldn't be able to convert as the clock expired. Pioneers win the game 56-54.
