Pioneers Hold Off Eagles
Pioneers Hold Off Eagles-Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 11-12-22
Lady Pioneer basketball hosted Pensacola Christian College this afternoon in the Carter Activities Center. The Lady Pioneers looked to bounce back, and add one to the win column after a Thursday loss to Williams Baptist University. Pensacola Christian would give CRC a fright, but the Lady Pioneers would hold out defeating the Lady Eagles 59-56.
Quarter one, neither team's defense would start the matchup strong as both teams scored at will. Even with this high paced game, neither team would be able to pull ahead more than 4. It would be the young Pioneers leading the way once again. Freshman Hunter Gibson went a perfect 4-4 from the field, including one from behind the arc, and 2 from the charity stripe producing 11 points. Freshmen Alayzah Foster came off the bench and provided a solid 5 points giving them a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Quarter two, CRC would look to increase their lead, and again it would be the young Pioneers taking charge. Sophomore N'Kyah Edwards would enter the game and bucket a respectable 5 points, thus helping the Pioneers to a 33-30 halftime lead.
Quarter three, the Pioneers would not be able to pull away with the game as the Eagles capitalized on the Pioneer turnovers. The difference maker in this quarter would be Freshmen Reigiana Ward. The Bald Knob, Ark. native produced 6 points going 3-4 from the field on the offensive attack but also had several stops including taking a charge that kept the momentum on the Pioneer side. Hunter Gibson added to her stat line, following Ward in points by adding 5. The Pioneers end quarter three up 47-41.
Quarter four, with the game close, it would come down to key shots from the charity line to push the Pioneers ahead. 7 of the 12 points the Pioneers mustered this quarter would come from the free throw line. Freshmen Brinley Morgan led the Pioneers going 3-4 from the line, giving the Pioneers the lead they needed to slip past the Lady eagles 59-56.
