CRC Baseball Falls Twice On Opening Day- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 2-9-24
Game One:
Crowley's Ridge- 1
Champion Christian- 7
Hot Springs, Ark.- CRC Baseball traveled to Hot Springs, Ark. to take on NCCAA opponent Champion Christian College in a four-game series to open the 2024 season. When the final out was recorded in both contests today, CRC found themselves on the losing side. In the season-opening game, it would be the long ball that sealed the Pioneer's fate as the hosting Tigers defeated CRC 7-1 despite only outhitting CRC eight to six. Champion Christian College pulled away with the score in the bottom of the third with a strong 4-run inning thanks to three homers. Thomas Lamb came into the contest in relief of starter Jack Roney with the reliever tossing 3.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, and 2 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 1. Starter Roney threw 2.2 innings for the Pioneers and allowed five runs (four earned), on 5 hits, striking out two and walking two taking the loss. Trey Drake, Blake Wilson, Brylan Honeycutt, James Wilson, Josh Schmitt, and Kade Lindgren all had one hit in the contest with Lindgren claiming CRC's only run with an RBI single.
Game Two:
Crowley's Ridge: 4
Champion Christian- 10
Hot Springs, Ark.- In game two, CRC again saw the Tiger offense strike first with the Tigers pouncing ahead of CRC 7-0 after the opening two innings of action with CCC scoring three runs in the first, followed by four more in the second. CRC sticks found rhythm as they answered offensively in the top of the third, cutting the score to 7-4 with a big four-run inning. CRC snatched a page out of the Tiger playbook with lefty sophomore Trey Drake smashing a three-run homer to center field who was followed two Pioneer batters later by junior Adonis Thomas who drilled a solo shot to right field. Grievously for CRC, the Pioneer offense wouldn't be able to string more big-time hits together for the remainder of the contest as they fell 10-4. JackHenry Glasgow took the loss on the mound in game two as the junior gave up 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2 over 3.0 innings of work. Two Pioneers collected multiple hits in the contest with Trey Drake leading with his (2-3) performance with 3 RBIs, one double, and one homer. Freshman Brylan Honeycutt claimed the other slot by going (2-3) with two singles and scoring one run. Lastly, Adonis Thomas took credit for CRC's other RBI with his (1-4) solo homer game.
Up Next: CRC will stay in Hot Springs as they will finish the last two games of the series tomorrow with game one starting at 10:00 AM due to incoming weather. #GOPIONEERS
