Pioneer baseball splits home opener with Lane

PARAGOULD, Ark. – Playing for the first time at Pioneer Park in 2022, Crowley's Ridge baseball split a Tuesday doubleheader with Lane (Tenn.) College. First losing in a 13-10 slugfest before besting the Dragons 9-1 before darkness prevailed after five innings.
Game One
Lane – 13
Crowley's Ridge – 10
In a game in which Crowley's Ridge and Lane split 23 runs and 19 hits, it was the guests who jumped on top early. The Dragons (1-2) took advantage of an early error by the Pioneers to plate two runs in the first inning. Scoring runs in all seven innings, Lane put up three more runs in the second and one in the top of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Crowley's Ridge (2-3) got on the board after Corbett Seib doubled home Bobby Wright in the bottom of the third inning. It was Phoenix Beal's bat that did the most damage for CRC, hitting a three-run homer (1) to deep left field to cut into the Dragon lead 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Beal struck again in the bottom of the sixth, with a bases-clearing double. John Grace, Jr. then grounded out to plate Noah Overshine before Trey Gossett's RBI single set up Chipper Lamb to score the tying run with a single to right.
The Dragons would add three runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach 13-10.
Chance Arender got the start for the Pioneers, while JackHenry Glasgow (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Beal ended game one going 3-4 from the plate while driving in six runs. Lamb followed with a pair of hits.
Game Two
Lane – 1
Crowley's Ridge – 9
Kyle Russell (1-0) debuted in style, striking out the first batter of his collegiate career en route to a 9-1 victory.
Crowley's Ridge (3-3) struck hard and fast, tallying three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Gross's RBI single scored Bobby Wright before a two-run error put the home team up 3-0. Uncontent with his solid first game, Phoneix Beal hit another three-run double in the bottom of the third to put the Pioneers on top 6-0.
Lane (1-3) bounced back with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning, but the Pioneers added three more runs to seal the victory 9-1. Gameplay ended with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning due to darkness, but with five completed defensive innings, the Pioneers claimed victory.
Russell allowed three hits and one run, walking three while striking out six.
Trey Gossett was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits, going 3-4 from the plate.

The Pioneers will host Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University on Friday, February 18, and Saturday, February 19 for a four-game series. Friday's doubleheader begins at 12:00 p.m.
